Excerpt from Awakening Love
According to the Torah we are all made in the image of God. It’s not that we look like God, but that our image, our being, has been created as a reflection of God’s essence. We are living, breathing forms containing the essence of God within us, but while we believe that what we see is all that we are, we’re missing the most amazing aspect of being human.
The most important parts of us are invisible. Even though we’re clearly created in a physical form, so much of who we are can’t be seen in the material world. Every feeling we have, every sense about life, all of our knowledge and analytical understanding, can be expressed through our physical actions, but each of these attributes always remains completely unseen.
When we speak of being made in the image of God, we are referring to this invisible image, of the qualities within our own mind. Our very essence, our reason for being alive, comes through our sense of humor, our wisdom, anger, and love, and is the creative source of all our accomplishments, from simply surviving to creating institutions and nations.
So God created Man in His image … male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27)
Just as our invisible consciousness is the basis for everything we create, so the invisible consciousness of the universe is the source of everything we have not created. We were given life—we didn’t create it. We obviously didn’t invent trees or rivers, or even the way that humans, animals, and plants can reproduce. And we don’t feel the earth constantly spinning on its own axis, zooming around the sun at breakneck speed. Clearly, we humans could never have formed everything that is in our world: the brilliance of the mind behind its creation is beyond our comprehension.
